Semen Indonesia uses biomass as alternative fuel

09 October 2020 10:54

JAKARTA - State-owned cement manufacturer PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SMGR) or SIG has, through its subsidiary PT Solusi Bangun Indonesia Tbk (SMCB), partnered the Jakarta Municipal Environment Office and PT Unilever Indonesia Tbk (UNVR) to process domestic waste at Bantargebang Integrated Waste Facility in Bekasi, West Java into refuse-derived fuel (RDF).

SIG has previously used biomass as alternative fuel since 2008 at its plant in Tuban, East Java. The materials used include rice husk, coconut husk, sawdust, tobacco waste, and corn kernels delivered from Tuban, Lamongan, Bojonegoro, and Banyuwangi.

“In addition to its efficiency compared to coal, the use of alternative fuel also empowers farmers and communities around our plants,” said SIG Chief Production Officer Benny Wendry in an official statement on the Ministry of State-owned Enterprises’ website, Thursday (8/10).

In SIG’s partnership with the Jakarta Environment Office and Unilever Indonesia, waste will be dug out at Bantargebang and then delivered to SBI’s plant in Narogong, West Java to be mixed with other materials and processed into RDF. The project is estimated to produce 1,000 tonnes of RDF per month, 80%-90% of which consists of plastic waste that will be used by SIG as an alternative energy source. (MS)
