JAKARTA – PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGEO) has partnered with PT Pertamina Gas (Pertagas), a subsidiary of PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk (PGAS), to develop green fuel in PGEO’s Geothermal Work Areas (WKP).

PGEO signed a joint study agreement with Pertagas on Wednesday (5/2), with several key executives from PGEO, Pertagas, and PGAS present at the signing ceremony.

“The collaboration between PGEO and Pertagas will accelerate the development of green hydrogen and green ammonia, laying the foundation for Pertamina to establish a green energy hub,” said Kitty Andhora, Corporate Secretary of PGEO, in a public disclosure on Thursday (6/2).

The partnership will cover various critical aspects, including the exchange of technical information related to operational condition analysis, thermal composition, electrolysis processes, and market potential identification.

PGEO and Pertagas will also conduct a thorough technical study to evaluate project feasibility, assess geothermal electricity utilization schemes, and identify the appropriate technology for green fuel production.

Once the technical study is completed, PGEO and Pertagas will move on to a more comprehensive feasibility study. This follow-up study will address investment potential, business development schemes, resource allocation, and an effective project implementation timeline.

Andhora added that the collaboration with Pertagas is part of PGEO’s long-term strategy. Traditionally, geothermal energy has been used primarily for electricity generation. However, Kitty noted that this energy source could benefit the industrial sector through the downstream development of renewable energy products.

“The development of green hydrogen opens up new opportunities for geothermal downstreaming beyond the electricity sector, supporting energy transition and accelerating decarbonization in Indonesia,” she concluded. (DK/KR/ZH)
