JAKARTA – PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk (GIAA) aims to add 100 aircraft by the end of 2025, in line with projections for the improving recovery of the air transport sector.

Wamildan Tsani Panjaitan, President Director of GIAA, stated that fleet optimization is being carried out by considering the principles of good corporate governance (GCG), market demand, and the company’s financial condition. The addition of aircraft is expected to improve operational efficiency and strengthen the airline's competitiveness.

According to Wamildan, 2024 was a significant momentum for GIAA. The airline successfully transported 23.67 million passengers, up by 18.54% compared to the previous year. This increase was also aligned with a rise in flight frequencies by 12.21%, reaching 163,271 flights throughout the year.

In terms of finances, scheduled flight revenue increased by 15.32% to US$2.74 billion, while revenue from charter services soared by 101.06%. However, GIAA still recorded a net loss of US$69.78 million, due to aircraft maintenance costs and a decline in extraordinary income previously gained in 2023.

“GIAA remains optimistic in facing challenges such as exchange rate fluctuations, supply chain issues, and intense competition in the aviation industry. One of the main strategies undertaken is the addition of aircraft to increase service capacity,” said Wamildan in an official statement, quoted by IDNFinancials.com on Thursday (March 27).

For information, from late 2024 to Q1 2025, GIAA has acquired two units of Boeing 737-800NG (PK-GUF and PK-GUG). In Q2 2025, the airline will operate two additional units of the same type, namely PK-GUH (MSN-44218) and PK-GUI (MSN-44217), which are currently undergoing maintenance before officially being used for domestic and international routes.
