JAKARTA – The Chinese government is intensifying cooperation with its key trading partners in response to the United States’ imposition of a 104% tariff on Chinese exports.

According to Anadolu Ajansi on Wednesday (9/4), Chinese President Xi Jinping called for strengthened collaboration with various nations amid Washington’s implementation of reciprocal tariffs.

Xi stated that China is committed to deepening supply chain partnerships and fostering a shared future with its global economic partners.

This marks Xi’s first public statement since US President Donald J. Trump announced the reciprocal tariffs on April 2.

China has already enacted retaliatory tariffs in response to the US measures. However, the US escalated its tariffs to 104% after Beijing refused to withdraw its countermeasures by the midnight deadline.

The tit-for-tat tariff war stems from Trump’s strategy to reduce the US trade deficit through aggressive tariff policies. The escalation has begun to affect the broader global economy, particularly impacting developing economies in Asia and Southeast Asia.

Amid rising tensions, several Asian stock indices have seen notable corrections in recent trading sessions. (LK/ZH)
