JAKARTA. Darmawan Djunaidi, CEO of PT Bank Mandiri Tbk (BMRI), has been awarded the Best CEO in the Largest Assets Bank in Indonesia by Tempo.co and IDNFinancials. The award ceremony took place at the Sofitel Hotel, Nusa Dua Resort, Bali last Friday (1/12). The event recorded attendance of more than 100 CEOs of public companies.

Darmawan received this award following his success in managing and improving the performance of BMRI’s assets, which, in the Q3 2023, had reached IDR 2,000 trillion. This achievement allows Bank Mandiri to be the first bank in Indonesia with total consolidated assets of IDR 2 quadrillion. The increase in assets was driven by growth rate of credit and third-party funds (DPK), which continue to grow positively, even now. Bank Mandiri also succeeded in disbursing credit, on a consolidated basis, of IDR 1,315.92 trillion as of September 2023, growing from IDR 1,167.51 trillion seen in the same period in 2022. In the same period, Bank Mandiri posted net interest income of IDR 71.86 trillion and net profit IDR 39.06 trillion.

Four years earlier, in 2019, the bank's assets only reached IDR 1.32 trillion, before increasing to IDR 1.43 trillion in 2020, then steadily and consecutively increasing in 2021 and 2022 to IDR 1.73 trillion and IDR 1.99 trillion, respectively. Meanwhile, net profit in 2019 only reached IDR 27.48 trillion. It dropped significantly due to the pandemic to IDR 17.12 trillion in 2020, before picking up in 2021 to IDR 28.03 trillion and soaring as high as to IDR 41.17 trillion in 2022. Until September 2023, BMRI’s net profit reached IDR 39.06 trillion.

From these data, the return on assets of Bank Mandiri from 2019 to 2022 is quite stable, respectively, 2.8%, 1.20%, 1.62%, and 2.07%, while in Q3 2023, the return on assets BMRI was reported at 1.95%.

In terms of sustainability, Bank Mandiri has committed to achieving net zero emissions (NZE) in its operation and financing. In 2022, Bank Mandiri carried out the tagline: Digital Transformation with Significant Impact on ESG. This highlights that digitalisation is believed to generate positive impact on achieving its ESG (environment, social, governance) objectives.

For this reason, Bank Mandiri also attempts to be a sustainability champion, standing at the forefront of ESG initiatives through digital transformation and other efforts. Digital transformation at Bank Mandiri also confirms its commitment to continue to prioritize ESG principles, from policy, strategy, to daily operations. Digital technology is also the answer to the future of banking and sustainability.

Due to the achievement of being the first bank in Indonesia to secure the largest assets, as well as maintaining its sustainability, Darmawan is fit to receive the award as the Best CEO in the Largest Assets Bank in Indonesia from Tempo.co and IDNFinancials.
