National car sales saw 26.21% decline yearly
JAKARTA – The data from the Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO) recorded 26.21% year-on-year (yoy) decline in motor vehicle sales as of March 2024. The market share of PT Astra Internasional Tbk (ASII) was also seen corrected compared to the same period last year.
Based on the press release quoted today (17/4), Boy Kelana Soebroto, Head of Corporate Communications of ASII, mentioned that national car sales as of March 2024 reached 74,724 units, up 6% from February 2024 of 70,698 units. “Astra’s car wholesale as of March 2024 was at 40,438 units, with market share of 54%,” he added.
However, car sales in March 2024 were lower than March 2023’s record, in which car sales clocked up to 101,272 units. These include Astra’s cars of 52,687 units (52.02%) and cars from other manufacturers, such as Mitsubishi, Honda, Suzuki, Hyundai, Wuling, Nissan, and others of 48,585 units (47.97%).
As of February 2024, ASII’s car sales were reported at 41,240 units with market share of 58%, while sales of cars from other manufacturers were at 29,458 units or 42%. For comparison, in February 2023, Astra’s car sales were at 46,564 units with market share of 53%, and sales of cars from other manufacturers of 40,495 units or 47%.
“We support domestic automotive industry by providing various options of vehicles according to the interest and needs of consumers, technology development, as well as adequate electrification ecosystem development, so that it contributes in driving national automotive market growth,” Soebroto explained.
In regard to low-cost green car (LCGC) sales as of March 2024, GAIKINDO recorded sales of 16,840 units, which 72% of market share was dominated by Astra. In February 2024, market share of Astra’s LCGC took up 74% of total 16,379 units. (LK/ZH)
