6 teams from different countries compete in answering nickel mining sector challenges
JAKARTA. A total of 6 finalist teams of the Global Case Competition held by the Harry Susilo Institute for Ethics in the Global Economy, met in the final round held on Thursday (30/5) today in Jakarta.
The competition, supported by PT Ifishdeco Tbk (IFSH), sought to address the challenges of the growing nickel mining industry in Indonesia, such as environmental and social challenges. In this final round, the finalists were asked to explore a number of issues caused by mining activities.
Gregory L. Stoller, Senior Lecturer at Boston University, said the competition was attended by more than 70 teams from 16 countries and has been running for 1 year. After a series of preliminary rounds, six teams traveled to Indonesia for the final round.
“The finalists from Germany, Japan, the United States, Mexico, Lebanon, and Indonesia traveled to Jakarta to present their proposals to a panel of judges,” Stoller said.
Meanwhile Ryan Fong Jaya, IFSH Commissioner and a judge in the competition, said the agenda was created to showcase ideas from academia for nickel mining companies to implement. “This is expected to make Ifishdeco an example for other national mining companies, in implementing ESG practices,” Ryan said.
In addition, said Ryan, IFSH's participation in this competition also aims to raise awareness about nickel mining issues. Moreover, Ryan said, the mining sector has become one of the major contributors to the state budget in the long run.
At the end of the event, the judges won 2 teams with the best ideas that addressed the challenges of the nickel mining industry in Indonesia. The first winning team came from the University of Beirut and the second winning team came from Baden - Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW Loerrach). (KR/LM)
