PTBA and BRIN start on processing coals for Li-ion battery materials
JAKARTA. PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA), a part of state-owned mining holding (MIND ID), is starting a pilot project with National Research and Innovation Agency (lit. Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional/BRIN) to convert coals to artificial graphite and anode sheet, two of raw materials of Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery.
Dilo Seno Widagdo, Director of Portfolio and Business Development of MIND ID, said that this project is in line with MIND ID's commitment to optimize added value of mineral and coal resources of Indonesia's coals.
"MIND ID focuses on supporting electric vehicle (EV) battery ecosystem. Therefore, this potential should be fully promoted by the entire MIND ID group," Widagdo said in the official statement.
Meanwhile, Arsal Ismail, President Director of PTBA, claimed that this partnership is a joint effort to realize clean-technology-based coal industry in Indonesia.
"The implementation of coal-based anode sheet is the first of its kind in the world, thereby become one of the most vital innovation in coal down streaming process," added Ismail.
In general, conversion of coal to Li-ion battery materials will require several steps. PTBA wishes that this project may be carried out according to plan designed alongside BRIN. (KR/ZH)
