JAKARTA – Statistics Indonesia (lit. Badan Pusat Statistik/BPS) recorded inflation at 2.12% in August 2024, slowing down from 3.27% seen in August 2023. Similarly, inflation from July to August 2024 were seen at minus 0.03%, while year-to-date (ytd) recorded inflation shifting at 0.87%.

In the press release quoted Monday (2/9), Windhiarso Ponco Adi, Director of Price Statistics of BPS, said that the yearly inflation resulted from price surge.

Price surges were detected in several expense groups, namely food, drink, and tobacco of 39%, clothes and footwear of 1.19%, water, electricity, and household fuel of 0.57%, healthcare of 1.72%, transportation of 1.42%, recreation, sports, and culture of 1.52%, education of 1.83%, food and beverage provider of 2.24%, as well as personal care and other services of 6.04%.

Inflation downtrend has been apparent since April 2024, at 3%, followed by May 2024 at 2.84%, June 2024 at 2.51%, and July 2024 at 2.13%. In the first half (H1) of 2024, inflation peaked in March 2024 at 3.05%.

The province with the highest inflation was Highland Papua of 5.05% with Consumer Price Index (CPI) at 110.78 points, whereas the lowest inflation was detected at Bangka Belitung Islands of 1.02% with CPI at 103.78 points. (LK/ZH)
