JAKARTA. The Ministry of Finance (Kemenkeu) has received a proposal from the DPR RI State Financial Accountability Committee (BAKN), regarding the excise rate for packaged sugary drinks (MBDK) of 2.5%.

Askolani, Director General of Customs and Excise at the Ministry of Finance, said that the proposal had so far been accepted as a recommendation. The implementation decision, said Askolani, would still be left to the next government.

"That's just a recommendation. But it will depend on the government next year," said Askolani.

Previously in a working meeting held by the Ministry of Finance and BAKN DPR RI, the excise rate of 2.5% was mentioned as an effort to reduce the high negative impact of MBDK. Apart from that, this proposal is considered to be able to increase state revenues, while reducing dependence on excise taxes on tobacco products.

"We recommend that the government implement MBDK excise at 2.5% in 2025 and gradually up to 20%," said Wahyu Sanjaya, Chairman of BAKN DPR RI, in a working meeting last Tuesday (10/9). (KR/LM)
