Indonesia to repatriate death row drug convict to France
JAKARTA. The Indonesian government will repatriate Serge Atlaoui, a French citizen sentenced to death for a drug case, on February 4, 2025.
The move is in accordance with an agreement between the Indonesian and French governments. The agreement was signed by Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra and the French Ambassador through a practical arrangement on Friday (24/1) yesterday.
‘The Indonesian government decided not to execute the prisoner, and agreed to transfer him to France,’ said Yusril, in a press conference held after the signing of the agreement.
Yusril added that the French government had also agreed to commute Atlaoui's death sentence to a maximum of 30 years' imprisonment. However, the duration of this confinement can be cut, if the French government grants clemency.
Atlaoui is a convicted drug offender who was arrested in 2005 for operating an ecstasy factory in Tangerang. He was previously detained in Nusakambangan Prison, but was recently transferred for health reasons. (KR/LM)
