JAKARTA – In collaboration with its strategic partner, Beton Merah Putih (BMP), a subsidiary of PT Cemindo Gemilang Tbk (CMNT), has introduced its latest product to support green construction: carbon injection concrete, also known as carbon-mineralised concrete.

This carbon injection technology is provided by BMP's strategic partner, CarbonCure Technologies, a Canadian green technology company.

"We've long collaborated through technology transfer with CarbonCure in Canada and Australia. We solidified our trials at our plant in Tegal Danas in 2024," said Akhmad Syamsuddin, Operational Director of BMP.

Syamsuddin explained that CO2 emitted from the cement-making process would be reintegrated into the concrete formation process. This technology reduces carbon emissions during production, supporting the government's agenda to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.

In addition, this carbon-mineralised concrete is said to be stronger than conventional concrete. "After being researched, mixing CO2 with concrete increases its strength by about 3-4%," Syamsuddin continued. Furthermore, making concrete with this technology is said to reduce the proportion of cement in concrete by up to 4%.

"However, the investment for this carbon technology is quite large," admitted Syamsuddin. With investments reaching around Rp1 billion for one batching plant, BMP is known to have to raise prices by 5-10% for carbon injection concrete products.

To offset costs, BMP plans to target projects backed by Mitsubishi, a shareholder in CarbonCure.

"They will certainly focus on concrete with their technology. We are also promoting, to the audience and the government, that carbon injection concrete is a very good product because the quality of the concrete increases, making it premium," said Syamsuddin.

Last year, BMP reported it had initiated 3 projects from its plant in Tegal Danas, Cikarang. There are Hans Engineering & Construction projects with a volume of 20,000 m³, China State Construction with 25,000 m³, and Samato Royal in Meikarta with 5,000 m³.

In addition, as of today, BMP has also installed carbon injection technology at three of its concrete factories. "We are proud to have installed [the technology] at our three batching plants; in Tegal Danas, Cisauk, and Cempaka Putih," explained Syamsuddin.

For this year, BMP is targeting 7-10 projects using carbon injection concrete. As for 2026, BMP plans for 9 batching plants with carbon injection technology, with acquisition targets of 20-30 projects. The newest project this year is the clubhouse at Hiera Township in BSD City. (ZH)
