Trade war begins, Trump imposes high tariffs on Canada, China
JAKARTA - United States (US) President Donald Trump announced tariffs on goods imported from Canada, Mexico and China on Saturday (1/2).
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to the policy on her X account with a retaliatory tariff plan. Mexico will also co-operate with Canada to deal with this tariff policy. Meanwhile, China's Minister of Commerce has said he will fight this policy through the WTO (World Trade Organisation).
In his announcement, Trump imposed a 25% import duty or tariff on goods imported from Canada and Mexico. While China is subject to an additional 10% of the current tariff.
The policy, according to Trump, is in order to protect the US from the threat of ‘aliens’ and illegal drugs that kill citizens. ‘We need to protect US citizens, and it's my job as president to ensure the safety of all citizens,’ Trump said on Truthsocial, developed by Trump Media & Technology Group.
The tariffs will go into effect on Tuesday at 00.01 a.m. EST or 12.00 GMT, according to Trump's written order. (KR/LM)
