JAKARTA – President of the United States (US), Donald Trump, has suspended the threat of imposing high tariff on Mexico and Canada for the next 30 days, following negotiations with both countries’ leaders.

The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, and President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, revealed that they have agreed to strengthen law enforcement in border areas. It is related to Trump’s demand to address illegal immigrants to drug-smuggling issues.

Prior to this, Trump had planned to impose 25% tariff on goods imported from Mexico and Canada. Initially, it was set to take effect today (4/2).

In addition, Trump also plans to impose 10% extra tariff to China. So far, there has yet to be an agreement reached between both countries regarding tariff cancellation.

On the other hand, China is planning to challenge the US tariff hikes through World Trade Organisation (WTO). However, the spokesperson of White House mentioned a meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping, President of China, is expected to take place as soon as this week.

“It is expected to take place in few days,” said Karoline Leavitt, quoted by Reuters.

Meanwhile, several European Union leaders have convened in Belgium last Monday (3/2) in order to anticipate this new US tariff policy. (KR/ZH)
