OCBC NISP: High interest rates do not promise sustainable CASA growth

JAKARTA – PT Bank OCBC NISP Tbk (NISP) is focusing on increasing its current account and savings account (CASA) position sustainably by avoiding high-interest rate promotions for savings accounts.
According to Parwati Surjaudaja, President Director of OCBC NISP, the growth of CASA is not a short-term strategy. “We do not want CASA growth to rely solely on interest rates; for example, offering the highest possible rates, because that would not be sustainable,” she said.
As stated on its official website, OCBC NISP's highest savings interest rate (in rupiah) is 1% per annum, while interest rates for term deposits vary depending on the amount, but the maximum is 4.75% per annum.
Instead of raising savings and current account interest rates, OCBC NISP chooses to enhance capabilities and features for both individual and corporate clients to ensure they feel secure and comfortable keeping their funds with the bank.
“The digital capabilities we have developed so far are designed so that our clients, especially those connected with Nyala—Nyala Business as well—can expand their business using our systems,” explained Johannes Husin, Director of Bank OCBC NISP.
Echoing Johannes, Martin Widjaja, Director of Bank OCBC NISP, emphasised the importance of connecting corporate banking with retail banking.
“We understand that every company ultimately aims for the end consumer. That's why we have enriched the features of our digital platform, OCBC Business, to move in the direction we want,” he added.
According to OCBC NISP's Annual Public Exposure today (20/3), the bank’s Third-Party Funds (DPK) increased by 13.3% year-on-year (yoy), reaching IDR 205.9 trillion by the end of 2024.
Hartati, Director of OCBC NISP, revealed that current account and savings growth (CASA) recorded 12% in 2024, while term deposits grew 14%. This caused the CASA ratio to DPK to slightly decrease from 55.8% to 55.3%.
“The bank will continue to work on growing CASA in the future,” Hartati said. (ZH)
