Hundreds of thousands protest budget cuts, Trump tariffs

JAKARTA - The ‘Hands Off!’ protest spread to more than 1,400 points in a number of states in the United States (US) on Saturday (5/4) today.
The action, which involved more than 600,000 people, responded to various policies of US President Donald Trump. Starting from public service budget cuts to reciprocal tariffs that have a significant impact on the US economy.
In terms of public services, President Trump formed the Department of Goverment Efficiency (DOGE) with billionaire Elon Musk. This move led to the layoff of more than 200,000 US civil servants.
In addition, the Trump administration also cut some of the budget for public services in the US.
‘We have paid the price, as Trump and Musk took advantage. This is not just about money, but power,’ wrote the organiser of the Hands Off! action in his official statement.
A number of demonstrators, as quoted by Reuters, also voiced the impact of reciprocal tariffs that affect most US trading partner countries. Not only does it harm trading partner countries, this tariff policy is believed to make more US citizens lose their jobs and pension funds.
Meanwhile, White House Assistant Press Secretary Liz Huston said that President Trump's position is quite clear. ‘He will continue to provide social security, health, and medical protections for deserving beneficiaries. Not illegal citizens, which can harm the country's finances,’ said Huston. (KR/LM)
