World tycoons lose US$208 billion due to Trump tariffs

JAKARTA – The total losses of some of the world's richest individuals have reached US$208 billion since US President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on 52 trading partner countries.
This loss represents the largest decline in wealth since the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. However, the average reduction in the wealth of these billionaires is approximately 3.3%.
Here is a list of losses experienced by some of the world's richest individuals:
Mark Zuckerberg
The founder of social media giant Facebook had successfully boosted the market value of Meta Group by over US$350 billion from the start of the year to mid-February 2025. However, since mid-February through Thursday (April 3), Meta's stock price has dropped by 28%. This decline is estimated to have caused Mark Zuckerberg a loss of up to US$17.9 billion, or about 9% of his total wealth.
Jeff Bezos
Amazon's stock price also fell by 9% on Thursday, marking the largest drop since April 2022. This decrease resulted in Amazon's boss losing US$15.9 billion.
Elon Musk
Recognized as Tesla's CEO and one of President Donald Trump's closest associates, Elon Musk reportedly lost US$11 billion on Thursday. Furthermore, since the beginning of the year, Elon Musk's wealth has evaporated by US$110 billion.
Ernest Garcia III
Ernest Garcia III, known as the CEO of Carvana Co., has seen the stock price of his used car sales business drop by 36% since mid-February 2025. This decline has caused Ernest Garcia III's total wealth to plunge by US$1.4 billion.
Tobi Lutke
The founder and CEO of Shopify, Tobi Lutke, has seen his wealth decrease by US$1.5 billion, or 17% of his total wealth. Shopify, which relies on the sale of imported goods, has reported a revenue decline of up to 20%.
Bernard Arnault
Known as the richest person in Europe, Bernard Arnault's losses following Trump's tariff announcement are estimated at US$6 billion. The imposition of tariffs is believed to have negatively impacted the profitability of several luxury products owned by Bernard Arnault, such as Christian Dior, Bulgari, and Loro Piana.
