JAKARTA – The exchange rate of the rupiah against the US dollar continues to weaken, reaching its lowest level at Rp16,653.4 at 9:45 AM WIB today.

However, ahead of the spot market closing at 3:19 PM WIB today, the rupiah slightly strengthened to Rp16,585.9 per US dollar. This level is still lower than the 1998 crisis, which reached Rp14,800, as well as the 2020 pandemic, which was at Rp16,575 per US dollar.

The Director of Monetary and Securities Asset Management at Bank Indonesia (BI), Fitra Judisman, said that the current depreciation of the rupiah was caused by uncertainty over tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. "This includes the impact of the trade war between China and several other emerging countries in Asia," Fitra explained, as quoted by Reuters.

Fitra added that this decline prompted BI, as the central bank, to call for intervention aggressively in the foreign exchange market on Tuesday (March 25) today. "To maintain the balance of foreign exchange supply and demand in the market," Fitra added.

Since the beginning of 2025, the rupiah's exchange rate against the US dollar has weakened by about 3%. Meanwhile, the US Dollar Index (DXY) has decreased by 6.10% to US$103.2 as of 3:19 PM WIB today. (KR/LM)
