Why Donald Trump imposed 32% tariff on Indonesia?

JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on 54 countries on Wednesday (2/4), including Indonesia.
The amount of tariffs to Indonesia is ranked 4th, among 9 out of 10 other ASEAN countries affected by the US tariff increase.
As previously reported by IDNFinancials.com, Trump announced that the tariff increase applies to 54 countries. Most of them, Trump said, were due to unfair tariff treatment against the US.
Indonesia, for example, according to details from the White House, imposes a 30% tariff on ethanol products from the US. Meanwhile, the US only imposes a tariff of 2.5% on imported ethanol products.
The White House also added that a number of Indonesian regulations are non-tariff barriers to US exports.
‘Indonesia applies local content requirements (TKDN) in various sectors, a complex import licensing regime, and starting this year requires exporters of natural resources to move export proceeds domestically,’ the White House wrote.
Meanwhile, President Trump said the tariff increase gave the US the power to negotiate with a number of trading partners.
‘I've done well since my first term as president,’ Mr Trump told reporters after the announcement of the reciprocal tariffs. ‘Now we're talking about a new level,’ he added. (KR/LM)
